Bangladesh
Name: The People's Republic of Bangladesh (also called Nation of rivers).

History: This land was once part of the Indian province of Bengal. After independence in 1947 it became Eastern half of Pakistan. In 1971 civil war broke between East and West Pakistan in which India helped East Pakistan to become the new nation of Bangladesh.

Size: 144,000 sq km

Geographic coordinates: Latitude between 20 degree 34' and 26 degree 39' North Longitude between 88 degree 00' and 92 degree East. The Tropic of cancer passes through Bangladesh.

Location: This country lies in southern asia.

Border: India in north, east and west; Myanmar and Bhutan

Coastline: Bay of Bengal lies to the south where Ganga and Jamuna spill into a maze of water and form the largest delta in the world.

Climate: It is warm and humid or tropical. Rainfall varies between 65 and 250 inches a year. Temperature - maximum 34 degree celsius and minimim 8 degree celsius. Rainfall lowest 47" and highest 136".

Principal rivers: Padma, Jamuna, Meghna, Brahamputra, Madhumati and Kushiara.

Terrain: It is a flat low land which has frequent floods. The Chitaggong hills lies in South east and have Teak forests.

Population: 138,448,210 (2003)

Population grouth rate: 2.1% pa

Ethnic group: Largest tribal group are Santhals and Garos. More than 95% people are bengalies and only 12% live in urban areas. In rural areas many people live in houses made of bamboo and travel by canoe.

Religions: Islam and Hinduism. It has second largest Muslim population of the world. Sunni muslims form 84% of the total population while Shia -15% and others just 1%.

Language: Bangla. English is also spoken.

Literacy: 26% only

Government Type: After independence it has seen days of milatery rule but now it has a Democratic elected parliament.

Capital: Dhaka

Constitution: It was written in 1972.

Executive branch: President is the head of state. Prime Minister is the head of the government.

Judiciary branch: Supreme Court is the highest whose chief justice and other judges are appointed by President.

Flag: Rectangular flag is bottle Green in colour which symbolises greenery of Bangladesh and a red circle in the center on the body of green which represents the rising sun and sacrifice made by people for independence.

Famous Places: National Parliament is an architectural wonder. Shaheed Minar - The National Monument reminds of those who gave their life for freedom.

National days: National Martyr's day - February 21, Independence day - March 26 and Victory day - December 16.

Legislative branch: Prime Minister is ceremonialy appointed by the President and must be a member of parliament.

National Embelem: It is the flower Shapla surrounded by two sheaves of rice

National Animal: Royal Bengal Tiger

National Bird: Doel - Magpie Robin (Copsychus saularis)

National Fish: Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha)

National Fruit: Jack fruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus)

Economy: Even today it is among the poorest countries of the world. Agriculture and fishing are main occupation. It ranks sixth in world rice production and also exports Jute, Tea, Leather and Newsprints.
